There are 88,000 artifacts, 100,000 photographs (many of which are available online), and 900,000 documents and manuscripts in the archives. Most are donated by families, and the center sometimes accepts documents and artifacts that have been held in safekeeping, sometimes for hundreds of years. History Center President Conor Hepp told me that the center encompasses the history of Chester County and wouldn’t accept a gift of an Egyptian mummy.

The history center is packed full of interesting stuff from the past 300 years. The original short clip even says that Rebecca wasn’t feeling well. It’s all there in the actual newspaper clipping. I’d have never known that in September of 1865 that Rebecca Rettew, 85, possibly a relative, died from the effects of drinking poisoned lavender brandy. I then joyfully explored the Chester County past of the Rettew Family. History Center Librarian Judy Ng handed me a stack of newspaper clippings simply marked “Rettew.” There is a similar file for most long-time Chester County families. Pre-historic googling is still available at the Chester County History Center. At the History Center, the past comes to life. The center holds keys to the past - concerning both people and events from long ago - that you would never know about otherwise. It’s that old argument - genetics or environment? Are we more a product of our genes or do our experiences most determine who we are?Ī good way to find out is by visiting the Chester County History Center in West Chester.
